The protein chain is represented as a string of beads

folded on a 3D lattice.

The native structure is the compact self-avoiding chain

with the lowest energy.

where ri is the of the i residue

Bij = contact energy for residues iand j

D(ri,rj) = 1 if i and j are in contact

D(ri,rj) = 0 if i and j are not in contact
