Stability of hexadecane thiol monolayers on ITO
Although alkanethiol monolayers on gold are versatile and stable layers, the same is not likely true on ITO. For example, Au-thiol self-assembled monolayers will form in solutions that have millimolar concentration of thiols. On the other hand, monolayers on ITO form only in neat ITO. We determined the strength of interaction of alkanethiols with indium oxide and tin oxide by calculation. Surprisingly, the calculated value is not vastly different than that for Au. In the figure below the solid line is for indium and the dashed line is for tin.
